St. Matthew Early Childhood Center
St Matthew Lutheran School is a Christian based school. Throughout the school year, the children will learn about God and Jesus through stories, music, thematic units, direct instruction, and play activities. Teaching is based on Christian joy, love, and understanding. The children will gain independence, self-confidence, responsibility, and concern for one another while developing pre-academic and kindergarten readiness skills in our preschool program so the transition to a more rigorous kindergarten classroom environment is seamless. Our goal is to make the transition between home and school a happy, exciting experience.

Curriculum
Using a series of themes, our curriculum teaches the following skills: alphabet (as letters and sound symbols – phonics), numbers, shapes, colors, hygiene, safety, health related topics, earth science, and cognitive skills. In addition, there is a strong emphasis on character development and family traditions. Social norms and courtesies are also addressed such as: listening, following directions, helping others, and bringing work to completion. Students are encouraged to be patient, share, be polite, be responsible, and obey authority. Bible stories are taught in order to make God known simply and clearly, in a way that children can understand. Children are offered the security of God’s love through Jesus Christ. Our curriculum also uses songs, action rhymes, art activities, and hands-on learning centers. Our character development instruction integrates morality and virtues throughout the day and across the curriculum. We focus on character development through monthly themes reinforced by role modeling, discussion, recognition, songs and books that emphasis a particular virtue. Representative of the virtues covered are: compassion, caring, consideration, cooperation, courtesy, diligence, friendliness, generosity, gentleness, helpfulness, joyfulness, kindness, patience, perseverance, respect, responsibility, self-control, thankfulness, and trustworthiness. Our goal is to lay the foundation for our students to grow into outstanding citizens at home and at school as a result of our emphasis on character development. In addition to our academic curriculum, students have the opportunity to explore areas of interest through self-selected activities scheduled throughout the day. These activities include: expressive art projects, puzzles, games, outdoor activities, and a variety of educational and imaginative toys. Our preschool afternoon program runs from 12:00pm to 2:30pm and includes additional self-selected activities, book reading, and theme related enrichment projects. Enrichment topics include: Cooking, Mathematics and Order, Science and Curiosity, Arts and Crafts, and Technology. Our enrichment topics are incorporated throughout our mornings as well; they are just isolated throughout the week in the afternoons. St Matthew Lutheran Preschool provides a non-competitive environment where each child progresses at his or her own rate which allows us to successfully offer and implement flexible scheduling. Upon the completion of our program, it is our goal to have each student make achievements in character development, emotional maturity, cognitive skills, motor dexterity, reading readiness, and knowledge of biblical truths. |
